Our Mobile Library Van is running!

We are excited to finally announce that our Mobile Library Van is up and running! Pen to Paper Ghana's mission is to help improve literacy in the youth in Ghana, and this Mobile Library Van is one step in achieving this.

Over the last few months, we’ve been raising funds for the van. From our previous experience of building school libraries in Ghana, the number of schools that actually make full use of the facility is small; the school staff generally have insufficient training to manage a library, and the majority of children do not have the basic reading ability needed to make use of the books. Therefore our proposal was to buy a van and convert it into a library to drive to schools and provide reading sessions and book resources.

At Pen to Paper Ghana, we are using the Mobile Library Van to, not only manage and provide a library facility for the children to borrow books, but also holding reading sessions to teach them the foundations of phonics.

As well as supporting schools, we are in discussions with a couple of doctors about going to the children’s wards in hospitals to hold reading sessions and give the children stimulation while they are recovering.

We want to say a HUGE thank you to the following who have helped financially with this:

  • Our Individual Donors and Pen to Paper Ghana Ambassadors

  • The Anne Frank Foundation

  • Ghana School Aid

  • Foundation for Educational and Entrepreneurial Development with Dignity and Sustainability (FEEDDS)

  • We won a Community Champion Award from the Daily Mail and General Trust and we have put the prize fund towards the Mobile Library Van.

We have been kindly donated some books from people but we’re still looking to stock up on more books to fill the mobile library and ensure we have a good range for all abilities of readers. If you any children’s novels that you want to donate, or provide a financial donation so that we can buy some books in Ghana, please get in touch at pentopaperghana@gmail.com.
